Next Step Compliance are Kent’s outsourced quality managers. We specialise in helping small businesses in Kent get ISO 9001 certification and maintain it.
We are a family run business with Jeanette Wessen, Director, IRCA registered and Tim Thompson.
We provide done for you and done with you ISO 9001 management. Some of our ISO 9001 in Kent clients need us only for internal audits, others we internally audit, consult in their system, review documents, report and close non-conformitities, run management review meetings and support with external ISO 9001 audits.
Do You Actually Need ISO 9001?
Let me break it down into these quick questions, if you answer “yes” to any of these, then you more than likely need it.
Your customers are asking for it (B2B supply chain, major contracts, tenders)
You are in a regulated industry (electrical, construction, manufacturing, food)
You want to win larger tenders and bigger contracts
You need documented processes that actually work for your business
If you are unsure, click here to book a free 30 minute chat with one of our ISO 9001 consultants (you will get either Jeanette or Tim).
Should you wait for ISO 9001:2026?
Short answer: no.
ISO 9001:2026 is expected to publish in September 2026. Until it does, ISO 9001:2015 is the only version you can be certified to, and every certification body is still auditing against it. Waiting does not get you a newer certificate. It just delays the contracts you need the certificate for.
When the new version lands, businesses already certified get a three year transition period, expected to run to September 2029. That is a long runway, and the revision is evolutionary rather than a rebuild. The clause structure stays the same. A system built properly now carries straight across.
There is one change already in force. The climate amendment published in February 2024 means you have to consider whether climate change is relevant to your business and record that assessment, even if the answer is no. Auditors are checking for it now, in 2015 audits. If your existing system does not cover it, that is a gap worth closing before your next surveillance visit.

Here’s the real problem: choosing the right consultant matters
Linton Electrical Contractors learned this the hard way. Their previous ISO experience left them feeling “dictated to rather than listened to.” They found the standard confusing, became disillusioned, and nearly gave up.
When they came to us, we did something different. We listened to their actual concerns, understood what it takes to run a small electrical business, and worked with them to find practical solutions, not force-fit a standard onto how they work.
They ended up with ISO 9001 certification, CHAS accreditation, and access to larger contracts and tenders.
“It was refreshing to be listened to rather than dictated to. My faith in the ISO process was restored.”
— Linton Electrical Contractors
What we do differently
100% Certification Pass Rate
Every single business we have supported has passed ISO 9001 in Kent certification on first attempt. We don’t rush you into audit prep until the system actually works for you.
No Software Lock-In
Some consultants use their own platforms so you are stuck paying them forever. We don’t. You own your documentation, your systems, your compliance. If you decide to work with someone else tomorrow, you can.
Direct Access to Jeanette & Tim
You don’t get assigned to a rotating pool of consultants. You work with us directly. Jeanette is an IRCA Lead Auditor with 13 years in education and four in compliance. Tim brings hands-on manufacturing expertise. This matters because we understand the specific challenges of manufacturing, construction, electrical, food production, and facilities management businesses (plus many more). We’re not generalists who treat every business the same.
On-Site, Embedded Support
We don’t email you a 200-page document and disappear. We work alongside you on site, understand how your business actually operates and build a system that fits your reality, not force your reality to fit the standard.
Transparent About Cost Upfront
No hidden fees. No surprise invoices. We tell you what it costs before you commit.
After Certification, We Stay
The work doesn’t end when you pass the audit. We can stay on as your Outsourced Compliance Manager. Handling internal audits, CAPA tracking, documentation updates, audit prep. You get the compliance expertise without the full-time salary.

Support during external audits
We are there alongside you so you have someone who knows your system and can respond confidently to the auditor.
What to expect when we first start working together
Every business is at a different stage with ISO 9001 in Kent. Some are starting from scratch, some have a system that has drifted, and some just need someone to keep it running between audits. We work on site rather than remotely, because a quality system built from a distance rarely survives contact with how you actually operate.
If you want the full certification process in more detail, we have written a practical guide to getting ISO 9001 certified as a small business in the UK.
Step 1 – Understanding where you are now
We come to your site and look at how work actually flows through your business, from enquiry to delivery. Then we gap analyse that against ISO 9001, on site, so you can see exactly what you already have and what is genuinely missing. If you have ISO 9001 certification already, we will have a meeting so we can see what your QMS looks like right now.
Step 2 – Agreeing the right level of support
Some businesses need a quality management system built from scratch. Others have one that has drifted and needs bringing back on track and some just needs managing or internal audit. We agree the scope, the timeline around any tender deadlines, and (if you are new to ISO) which UKAS accredited certification body suits you.
Step 3 – Getting to work
We build the system for ISO 9001 in Kent, with you on site. Your processes written as they really run, document control, supplier approval and a proper route for handling nonconformities. Then internal audits and a management review before we take you into your Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits.
Step 4 – Ongoing support where needed
ISO 9001 runs on a three year cycle with surveillance audits in between. For some businesses we hand over and step back. For others we stay on as your outsourced quality manager, running the internal audits and keeping you audit and tender ready.

FAQ
How much does an ISO 9001 consultant cost in Kent?
ISO 9001 in Kent consultancy costs in Kent vary depending on what you actually need, and I think it’s important to be upfront about that rather than give a headline figure that doesn’t reflect reality.
The two main types of support have quite different cost structures. Project-based work, where I help you build your quality management system from scratch and take you through to certification. This is typically scoped and priced based on the size of your business, how complex your operations are and how much support you need along the way. For most small businesses in Kent this is a defined piece of work with a clear start and end point.
Ongoing support and internal audits are usually priced as a fixed fee per audit or day if you want someone to keep your system on track between certification cycles.
The most useful thing I can do is have a short conversation with you first. Once I understand your business and what you need, I can give you a clear and honest figure with no obligation.
How is working with a local ISO consultant different from using an online service?
When you work with a local ISO 9001 consultant in Kent, you get one dedicated person who gets to know your business, your team and how you actually operate. No call centres, no chatbots, no being passed between different people every time you have a question.
You will see us on site directly. Our work is done on site rather than remotely so we can ask the questions we need and get to know your business well.
With an online service, you typically get a generic system built around a template, with remote support that can feel impersonal and slow when you need a straight answer quickly. A local consultant can visit your site, see how things actually work in practice and build something around your real business rather than a theoretical one.
There is also something to be said for being able to pick up the phone and speak to someone who knows your file, understands your audit history and can give you a practical answer that makes sense in the context of your business rather than a generic response.
For small businesses preparing for ISO 9001 in Kent or managing an existing system, that kind of direct, personal support makes a significant difference, particularly in the run up to an audit when confidence and preparation matter most.
Do you offer ongoing support after certification?
Yes, and this is something I think sets working with a local consultant apart from a one-off certification project.
Once you have your ISO 9001 certificate, the work doesn’t stop. You’ll have annual surveillance audits, management reviews to run and a system that needs to keep reflecting how your business actually operates as it grows and changes. For many small businesses, that’s where things start to slip.
I offer flexible ongoing support depending on what you actually need: –
- Internal audits carried out independently, giving you an honest view of how your system is performing before the certification body comes in.
- Support with management reviews, making sure they are meaningful and drive real improvement rather than feeling like a box ticking exercise.
- A retained service where I am available to answer questions as they come up, so you are never left second guessing whether something is compliant.
- Support during external audits and surveillance visits, so you have someone alongside you who understands the standard and can help translate or respond to the auditor’s findings.
- And for some businesses, I act as a fully outsourced quality manager, taking on the whole responsibility of keeping your system running so you can focus on running your business.
Whatever level of support makes sense for your business, we can agree something that fits, without paying for more than you need.

What industries do you work with in Kent?
Engineering and precision engineering, manufacturing including food manufacturing, electrical contractors, plumbers and facilities management, landscaping, cleaning services, construction, architects, civil engineering, surveyors, retail, spray painting and flight services plus many more.
The common thread is not the industry — it is the size. I specialise in small and medium businesses who need a practical, proportionate system that reflects how they actually operate, not a generic framework designed for a much larger organisation.
If your industry is not on that list it does not mean I cannot help. The principles of ISO 9001 in Kent apply across sectors and my approach is always to understand your business first and build around that. If you are not sure whether ISO 9001 is right for your type of business, I am always happy to have a straightforward conversation with no obligation.
